Mindo is a small town of about 3000 people. It is located
in the northwest of Pichincha Province, 2 hours from Quito,
by the new road, Calacali la Independencia. It is at 1224m.
above sea level and the temperature is between 18 and 24 degrees
centigrade. The annual precipitation is about 2500mm.
Mindo has different altitudes, from 1100m. above sea level,
to 3600m. above sea level, with different microclimates. Between
these altitudes, we can find the most biodiversity in flora
and fauna, especially birds.
There are many activities in Mindo, such as tubing on Mindo
River or Cinto River, visiting the butterfly or orchid farms
and ziplining through the forest canopy. You can also visit
the waterfalls and go rapelling.
Mindo has been nominated ¨Important Area for Birds¨
by the international organization , Bird Life. For that reason,
in Mindo there is a contest we call Christmas Bird Count.
The area is 24 km in diameter, approximately 576 square km.
The way we do the birds count is to divide up all the volunteers
into different places at different altitudes, and we see how
many species of birds we count in 24 hours.
Mindo won in 2000, 2006, 2007 and 2008, with more than 400
species of birds seen in 24 hours, out of a list of the 550
birds found in Mindo.
